But the judgment of God is upon the church as never before. If today’s church does not recapture the sacrificial spirit of the early church, it will lose its authenticity, forfeit the loyalty of millions, and be dismissed as an irrelevant social club with no meaning for the twentieth century. Every day I meet young people whose disappointment with the church has turned into outright disgust
Nobody was brave enough to suggest an answer but it did pique some interest. The letter was written in 1963 by Martin Luther King, Jr. as he sat in the jail at Birmingham.
Some of you may remember 1963. It was not really that long ago. This letter was, of course, written about desegregation. In the span of 46 years we have even elected a black president. (I disagree with him about a lot of issues but did give Alan Keyes some serious consideration.)
We have done a lot to overcome one effect. King named a larger underlying issue and I have to agree with everyone else’s comments from yesterday that we have not fixed it yet.
We need to live what we profess to believe.
