I understand if you can’t share more details…but maybe you could speculate why people would want things to work that way. I can understand why its “hard” to do…

Hmm, I guess never mind…I’m so USB drive deprived it would make sense to have one of “many” devices come up under the same letter every time. <chuckle> I recently got one that was actually big enough to store more than a CD (more than a DVD actually) on! A relatively of mine that you know gave it to me for Christmas…he was drawn me for the family exchange.

The serial numbers aren’t being used to set the drive letter.

This post receives the highest number of Google hits, by far, on my blog. I don’t know the exact reason that everyone else wants to know how to do this, but for myself it was a security measure.

The customer that I developed this for needed a way to lock users out of local Windows accounts (and allow only domain logins) when an external indicator was not present. We decided to use USB flash drives because they could be visually identified and are relatively inexpensive.

There are many miniature USB drives available (link to one article) and we needed to ensure that only drives that were endorsed by the system administrators could be used to unlock the local Windows accounts.

I took the information from this post and created an encrypted file on the drive that contains its serial number. If the user copies the authorization file to another drive, it won’t work.

Yeah, this project was essentially a virus. raspberry

Wow, that’s a great way to do it. Other than it turning out to be a pain to find the serial number, it was a good KISS solution.
